Car care › Paint › After the wash
You washed it. It looks clean. Then you run your hand over the hood and it feels like fine sandpaper.
That's normal, and it's not your fault. Here's what's going on, and the step most people skip.
1. Soap only takes off what's sitting on top
Road grime rinses off. But tiny bits of rail dust, tar, tree sap mist and paint overspray stick to the clear coat. Your wash mitt slides right over them.
2. You can't see it, but you can feel it
Try the bag test. Put your hand in a thin plastic sandwich bag and lightly glide it over the clean paint. If it feels gritty or bumpy, that's stuck-on contamination. Smooth paint feels like glass.
3. Wax over grit just seals it in
Wax and sealant sit on top of whatever is already there. If the paint is rough, it stays rough under the wax, and the wax doesn't bond as well.
4. A clay bar is a hassle, so people skip it
The old way works, but you have to knead the bar, keep it clean, and if you drop it on the driveway, you throw it away. That's why most people never clay at all.
5. Scrubbing harder makes it worse
Pressing down on gritty paint can leave light marks. The fix is the opposite: lots of soapy water and almost no pressure.
The easy fix: a clay towel
A clay towel is a microfiber towel with a clay layer on one side. It does the same job as a clay bar, without the kneading.
- Wash the car like you always do.
- While the paint is still wet and soapy, lay the towel flat and glide it. No pressure.
- Rinse the towel, move to the next panel.
- Dry the car right away.
Dropped it? Rinse it off and keep going. Works on paint, glass and wheels.
Straight talk: a clay towel removes stuck-on contamination. It doesn't remove scratches. Always use it on wet, soapy paint with light pressure. Used dry or pressed hard, it can haze the paint.
