That's bonded grit, brake dust and overspray that soap doesn't lift. This synthetic clay towel has a clay layer on one side that pulls it out in a few passes per panel.

Clay towel vs. clay bar

A clay bar does the same job, but you have to knead it, it covers a small area, and if you drop it, it's done. A clay towel covers a panel fast, needs no kneading, and if it hits the ground, you rinse it and keep going.

How to use a clay towel

Wash and rinse the car.

Spray one panel with clay lube, quick detailer or soapy water.

Wipe back and forth with light pressure.
